Guilt

(Emily's Voice)

I haven't written on the blog lately because I have been trying to find an easy way to break the news. I've decided that the best way is to just be truthful and completely blunt.

We have bought a new car.

Obviously this purchase has spurred a few feelings of guilt, mostly on my part. We are excellent at providing justifications for our purchase, but still it is hard to rationalize spending upwards of $20000 on something that seems like a luxury (especially in comparison to our beater car we were driving).

Besides this giant purchase, our challenge has been going quite well. We have been able to adhere to the rules very well and we don't feel like we are suffering at all. The upcoming Christmas season may pose us our greatest challenge, with gift-giving being the main theme. Stay tuned for our entry on giving at Christmas....

  1. Well, it may be a luxury, but you did specify at the beginning that you had an unlimited budget for fixing problems with the car - and I'm pretty sure you didn't rush out to buy a new one just because you weren't spending money on other things. I have been known to impulse shop in the grocery store when I don't get to spend money elsewhere...oooh! fresh strawberries! Best solution to that seems to be going crazy at the library...at least for me.

  2. Our experience may make you feel a little better. We drive two beaters and a two weeks ago we spent £500 (about $1000) to get one of them going again and today we are going to do the peasant's form of towing to get the other one in with exactly the same symptoms. Guess who is looking at a "new" car now?? In a city like TBay you cannot live without a car and for those still in the working world you cannot have an unreliable one. Shed the guilt. Really looking forward to seeing all of you at xmas. No presents!
